Science in Class One

Date: 11th Mar 2022 @ 5:14pm

In our seasons topic, as well as learning about the seasons and the changeable weather, we have been learning about different types of weather. Today we focussed on the sun. We discussed how the sun is a heat and light source and that it can be dangerous especially in the summer months as it give if UV rays which can damage our eyes and skin.

The children were set a challenge to see if they could think of ways to keep themselves protected in the sun. So as to do this, we used UV beads and placed them in different situations. One set were exposed to the sun, with no protection. Another set were covered with a hat and another set with sunglasses. Another set were placed in water and another set were covered in sun cream.

We predicted what would happen to the beads and if they were exposed to UV rays they would change colour. We had great fun and thought about the beads being our skin. We wanted to find ways to protect ourselves. We learnt that sun cream, sunglasses and sun hats were the best protection.
