How did the Vikings dye their clothes? Science investigations in Class 3.

Date: 14th Mar 2021 @ 5:10pm

Class 3 had a very hands on afternoon investigation how to dye wool with natural materials. We created a fair test, observed results over time and discovered some fascinating results.

We learnt how some colours were more difficult to create than others.

Certain natural materials produced surprising colour results.

Hot water is better than cold water because it is needed to loosen the fibres in the wool so it accepts the dye.

Salt acts as a fixative.

Only wealthy Vikings wore blue clothes because it was so tricky to dye clothes that colour.
